We posted a question on LinkedIn earlier this month and I thought I would share the highlights with you in this article. The question we asked was "We are studying performance management and would love your opinion. Do you think there is value in the employee doing a self evaluation as part of the performance appraisal process?" Turns out this was a "hot" question and we have received 89 responses so far. I think it is fair to say that people have very strong opinions when it comes to evaluating performance.

Write a meaningful subject line. Recipients scan the subject line in order to decide whether to open, forward, file or trash a message. Remember -- your message is not the only one in your recipient's mailbox. Before you hit "send," take a moment to write a subject line that accurately describes the content. Keep the message focused and readable. Often recipients only read partway through a long message, hit "reply" as soon as they have something to contribute and forget to keep reading. This is part of human nature. If your e-mail contains multiple messages that are only loosely related, in order to avoid the risk that your reader will reply only to the first item that grabs his or her fancy, you could number your points to ensure they are all read (adding an introductory line that states how many parts there are to the message). If the points are substantial enough, split them up into separate messages so your recipient can delete, respond, file or forward each item individually.

There was a thread on LinkedIn the other day that was very popular gathering 387 comments. The questions posed were "What are the best movies that teach leadership? What are some movies that you think have great leadership/teamwork lessons?" Right off the bat, I thought about The Godfather and figured that was the end of it but it seems lots of people had different ideas. I have listed some of their responses below but as you read through the list it might be good to keep this quote on leadership in mind. "I suppose I have a much different take on leadership than most people. I believe that charisma without character is dangerous. People follow the charismatic but the question arises whether we are following blindly." Just something to ponder while you consider the following list of suggested movies.
